Client escalation can put the safety of our clients and others around them at risk of harm and can lead to both short and long-term consequences. This course is designed for mental health staff and supervisors to learn about the phenomenon of escalation and to learn strategies for prevention, intervention, and resolving conflict. We will address the cognitions, emotions, and actions of clients in escalation as well as the cognitions of intervening professionals, particularly around the determination of dangerousness. Prevention will cover discrete skill-building within the context of case conceptualization. Intervention will address strategies with clients as well as others who may be escalated, including other professionals. Finally, we will practice an intervention to address the risk of ongoing resentment within the client’s support system.
