Part 2 will begin with a review of the stages of change model and Motivational Interviewing, as critical for continued engagement and goal-setting with clients around substance use. These are contextualized as two components of a Harm Reduction Psychotherapy approach, which the training will proceed to expand on by teaching harm reduction and CBT-based skills via a clinical scenario. Participants will learn about concepts such as “dignity of risk” and Abstinence Violation Effect, and their implications for goal-setting and referral to treatment. This training acknowledges the challenges of working with individuals who are subject to significant risk, and will explore techniques providers can utilize to manage expectations and fears.
