Joe Tunis has been an active participant in the Rochester music scene for the last three decades. As most listeners of this podcast are probably aware by now, I got into our local music scene in the mid-90s. By that time, Joe was playing in the band Hilkka and had already formed Carbon Records. Much of our conversation focuses on the 1990s and early 2000s. In the late 1990s, Joe also formed Pengo, a No Wave band with Jason Finkbeiner and John Schoen. Jason and John had both released music previously on Carbon Records. Joe and I discuss the history of Carbon Records, as well as what he has been up to in recent years with the label. Hilkka played all three of the Fat Day shows my friends and I booked in Rochester. Naturally, I had to use this opportunity to talk about Fat Day. Joe is also heavily involved in the experimental noise scene. We talk about this briefly during our conversation and I plan to have Joe on again eventually to cover any ground we missed. Joe also has a local radio show on WAYO and a podcast called My Teeth Need Attention. I'm including a ton of links that are relevant to all of Joe's projects in the show notes.
