By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us.

The love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.—“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.”—You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.—Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.—Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.—Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.—“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”—Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.

“You also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”—We ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
