Show #1014

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 7th March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

VW AIMS FOR 70% EV SALES IN EUROPE BY 2030

"The Volkswagen brand has presented its ‘Accelerate’ strategy that should speed up its electric plans. VW also mentions concrete model plans, although, in the case of the electric compact car, the German carmaker company has been sparing with detail." says electrive: "Volkswagen’s target is to increase the share of fully electric cars. Sales in Europe should rise to over 70 per cent by 2030. This is a doubling of the previous plan of 35 per cent. In the U.S. and China, the company is targeting an EV share of more than 50 per cent over the same period. “Every year we bring at least one new electric car,” VW brand chief Ralf Brandstätter said at the strategy presentation. “We’re picking up speed and going into large volumes and covering all segments.”

ID.4 GTX coming in H1 2021, then ID.5 Coupe in 2021 and ID.6 X for China, 7 seat SUV.

ELON MUSK: TESLA IS DOUBLING THE SIZE OF ITS FULL SELF-DRIVING BETA PROGRAM

"Elon Musk says that Tesla is doubling the size of its Full Self-Driving Beta program with an upcoming new update. Another one following it could see the size of the test fleet increase by a factor of 10." according to Electrek: "Since the first beta release in early access, Tesla has released several new versions of the beta software and gradually opened up the beta release to more owners, but it has yet to have a wider release and the rollout of new versions has slowed down over the last month or two. Earlier this week, Musk linked a wider release of the FSD beta to an updated version of the software coming next month. Now the CEO said that the number of Tesla owners testing the Full Self-Driving Beta will double with a new update. Last month, Musk revealed that there are over 1,000 Tesla owners currently testing the FSD beta."

UPDATED TESLA CYBERTRUCK DESIGN WILL ‘PROBABLY’ BE UNVEILED IN Q2

"After months of waiting and thousands of questions asking for another update, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said he will ‘probably’ reveal the updated design of the Cybertruck in the next few months." says Drive TEsla CAnada:Musk made the comments on Twitter, saying Tesla’s focus right now is getting Giga Texas up and running so they can begin manufacturing it later this year.  In an interview with Joe Rogan last month, Musk said the final design will look very similar to what we saw at the unveiling, but it will be about 3% smaller."

MAGNA UNVEILS NEW PHEV AND BEV DRIVE SYSTEMS

"Magna unveiled its all-new connected plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) drivetrain and next-gen battery electric (BEV) drive systems. Both systems were on full display at the company’s Winter Test driving location in northern Sweden." says Green Car COngress: "The Magna EtelligentEco, an intelligent, connected PHEV system that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 38%, offers a cloud connectivity feature allowing it to perform several new functions previously not possible. It accounts for local electricity sources when charging is required and recommends a greener power option to the driver. The hybrid transmission features a 120-kW e-motor at its functional core. The system performs in dynamic driving situations, as well as launch and reverse driving, all in electric mode. The Magna EtelligentEco offers a driving range of 62 miles."

TOP ELECTRIC MODELS IN 8 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES IN FEBRUARY

"The 8 countries whose data are aggregated for this analysis — in order of BEV market size — are Norway (BEV market size of 80,000 in 2020), the Netherlands (73,000), Sweden (28,000), Switzerland (20,000), Spain (18,000), Denmark (7,000), Finland (4,000), and Ireland (4,000). Once Germany’s data come in, it will be the largest single source of BEV sales data (194,000 BEV market in 2020)." says CleanTEchnica: "surprised to see the Tesla Model 3 in #1, since its sales in Europe are still a trickle in the first two months of each quarter relative to the 3rd month of each quarter. However, the whole market was in a serious lull following the boom from the end-of-year rush, which was stimulated by a need to get EVs registered in order to not face EU fines. But the LEAF being in #2 was an even bigger shocker. Most of us think of the LEAF as being a star of a previous generation but nothing to talk about or reference in 2021. Well, that’s just not the case. It is still seeing great sales thanks to its decade of sales experience and word of mouth, as well as its overall competitiveness in key regards (i.e., price). And it ended up #1 in the Netherlands last month. Then there was the Audi e-tron, which is very popular in Norway; the Volkswagen ID.3, which has been “conserving energy” since the December sprint yet is still popular enough to place 4th; and the ever popular Kia Niro EV."

XPENG PREDICTS IT WILL DELIVER FEWER ELECTRIC CARS THAN NIO IN THE FIRST QUARTER

"Chinese electric car maker Xpeng forecast it will deliver far fewer cars than rival start-up Nio in the first three months of the year." says CNBC: "New York-listed Xpeng announced overnight it would likely deliver around 12,500 vehicles in the first quarter. That implies deliveries of 4,262 cars for March, based on January’s 6,015 figure and drop to 2,223 in February. Even considering the week-long Lunar New Year holiday in mid-February, those figures fall short of Nio’s."
