Show #1016

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA BATTERY SUPPLIER LG PLANS FOR NEW 4680 CELLS

"Tesla’s 4680 battery cells could be produced by LG by 2023. According to sources, the cells, which will power Tesla’s all-electric vehicles, could be built in production sites that LG is considering in either the United States or Europe." reports Joey over at Teslarati: "While Tesla and LG have not yet agreed to a deal that would see the battery supplier taking on a more robust role beyond its job in China, the company plans to build a factory in the United States that would make cells of EVs and energy storage systems, a source told Reuters. The idea behind the production facility would be to cater to both U.S. and international customers, including startups. While it didn’t list any companies, in particular, one of Reuters’ sources indicated that it was hoping Tesla would be a client. LG hasn’t secured any orders from Tesla for the 4680 cells. 2170 cells are still being used and are in rising demand, as the Model 3 and Model Y are widely popular in China, and LG continues to provide cells for both projects."

POLESTAR PARTNERS WITH CHARGEPOINT TO IMPROVE CHARGING EXPERIENCE

"Polestar and ChargePoint are partnering up in an effort to improve the charging experience for Polestar 2 customers. The collaboration extends from the in-car experience and into the garage where daily charging occurs." according to InsideEVs: "Inside the Polestar 2, drivers will find a ChargePoint charging app embedded directly into the Polestar 2's infotainment system. That's possible because the Polestar 2 will come standard with Google’s Android Automotive Infotainment System. Additionally, Polestar customers will be able to bundle the cost of the ChargePoint Home Flex, a 50-amp WiFi-connected smart charger into the purchase price of the vehicle at the point of sale or lease.   The ChargePoint Home Flex costs $699."

TESLA WAS SPOTTED FILMING NEW TESLA SEMI

"Tesla was spotted filming a video of one of its new Tesla Semi electric truck prototypes on its test track in the Fremont, California-based factory. It’s the first time we have seen the new vehicle move on its own power." reports electrek: "The two new Tesla Semi trucks were only spotted in the back of trailers, but now one of them has been spotted driving under its own power for the first time. A drone flyover of the Fremont factory captured the Tesla Semi going around the factory’s test track. Tesla appeared to be filming the electric semi truck with a camera in the back of a lead vehicle. The sighting is somewhat significant since these new Tesla Semi prototypes are expected to be equipped with Tesla’s new 4680 battery cells and structural battery pack architecture. It could be one of the very first electric vehicles equipped with these new technologies on the road."

CHINESE ELECTRIC CARMAKERS ADD $13.65 BILLION IN VALUE

"Three U.S. listed Chinese electric carmakers added a collective $13.65 billion of value today (Tuesday 9th March) as their stock prices surged. The Chinese start-ups — Nio, Xpeng Motors and Li Auto — followed their American rival Tesla higher. " says CNBC: ""The electric vehicle makers were also given a boost by a Reuters report that the three companies could carry out a secondary listing in Hong Kong as soon as this year. Secondary listings in Hong Kong have been a popular route for Chinese companies that are already listed on Wall Street. In February, retail sales of so-called new energy passenger vehicles reached 97,000, an increase of 675% year-on-year, according to the China Passenger Car Association. In February 2020, almost the whole of China was effectively locked down to deal with the coronavirus outbreak"

TESLA PUSHES BACK REFRESH MODEL S/X DELIVERIES IN EUROPE

"Tesla has updated the expected delivery dates of the refresh Model S and Model X in Europe, extending what was already a long wait. Until today, buyers placing orders were being told to expect their new cars in September. Now according to Tesla’s online configurator, that has been pushed back another two months to November. The new date is visible in Germany and several other European markets we checked." according to a Drive TEsla Canada report today: "Changes to delivery estimates for Germany last year was among the first hints at the impending refresh for both vehicles. After more than a $7,000 price increase, expected delivery dates were pushed back four months to March 2021. These extra delays follow a similar update yesterday for buyers of the Model 3 and Model Y in North America. Delivery estimates for both vehicles were extended as far as into June"

AMPLE ANNOUNCES MODULAR BATTERY SWAPPING STATIONS FOR ANY EV

"A group of ridesharing, delivery, and municipal fleets in the Bay Area of California will soon be swapping batteries instead of fast charging. They’re working with Ample, a company that just publicly announced its technology after 7 years of under-wraps development" says CleanTechnica: "The company is using a modular battery system that is compatible with any electric vehicle. Instead of trying to swap the vehicle’s factory battery pack, they replace it with an aftermarket pack that is made of smaller modules. When someone pulls into the swap station, the automated swapping machine removes the modules one at a time and replaces them with freshly-charged modules. The stations don’t have to be installed permanently at a location, either. Like NIO in China."
