Show #1066

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 30th April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

WESTERN EUROPE EV MARKET – MARCH 2021

- PHEV volumes in Q1 2021 were ahead of BEVs for the first quarter out of the past ten

- German xEV production recorded its highest mix of total monthly production on record (18.8%) remaining within a 15% - 20% corridor for the sixth month out of the last seven.

- Tesla was the No.1 BEV brand in both March and Q1 and also recorded the most registered model with its Model 3 during the same periods.

- Tesla managed to halt its 12-month cumulative rolling market share decline at 13%. The report expects Tesla to regain traction in 2021, with its market share set to return to closer to 20 per cent by the end of the year. Its 12-month running peak was 31 per cent at the end of 2019 according to the report. VW Group led the way in the 12-month period up to and including March 2021 with 23 per cent share of the total BEV market.

- German xEV passengers cars in circulation (Parc) remain on course to be the first European market to hit the 1 million mark before by the end of this summer and just before German Chancellor Merkel departs her post, securing her electric legacy, all be it one year behind the government's original target.

- SUV/Crossovers remained the largest BEV car sector.

- The total West European 12-month BEV cumulative total up to and including March 2021 was 0.8 million units, with the 1 million 12-month cumulative mark expected to be reached this summer. The BEV share of the total market over the same period was 7.4 per cent.

From Jose Pontes: "#1 Tesla Model 3 – The sports sedan returned to form, by delivering 24,184 deliveries last month, a larger than expected high tide, allowing it to register 4 times more units than the runner-up Hyundai Kona EV. Regarding March, the Model 3 hade several 4-digit scores, namely in the United Kingdom (6,500 units), France (4,524), Germany (3,699), Norway (2,169), Italy (1,363) and Sweden and Austria, both with 1,192 units each."

CHARGING INDEX PLACES MERCEDES IN FIRST PLACE

"The victory of the Mercedes EQS is no coincidence and is based on several factors. For example, the EQS has the largest net capacity at 107.8 kWh. The battery of the Tesla Model S P100D still contains a lush 95 kWh. The Porsche Taycan comes in at 83.7 kWh. A lot helps a lot. The buyers of the Mercedes can draw on the full capacity." says electrive: "At the same time, the power consumption of the EQS is low on the motorway, thanks to good aerodynamics. The drag coefficient of cW=0.20 and the frontal area of 2.51 square metres result in a cA value of 0.5. With battery-electric cars that have a poor cA value, long-distance suitability suffers. This applies above all to SUVs, which have too large a frontal area due to their height. The third essential aspect for progress is the charging power in the defined window from 10 to 80 per cent SOC. All electric cars in the top 10 of the Charging Index have an average of over 100 kW. And the Mercedes EQS, unlike the Porsche Taycan, does not have an 800-volt battery system. But the large capacity enables a peak power of over 200 kW and an average of 164 kW even on a 400-volt basis. "

FORD NEARS DECISION TO LICENSE VW TECH FOR A SECOND EUROPEAN EV

"Ford Motor Co. is nearing a decision to license Volkswagen AG’s electric-car technology for a second model to be sold in Europe, people familiar with the matter said, a move that would deepen ties between two of the world’s largest automakers." says The Detroit News: "Ford has already said it plans to produce a car using MEB in Cologne, Germany, from 2023. Ford has been accelerating EV plans under Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley, one of the main architects of the alliance the U.S. and German manufacturers formed in 2018. Their cooperation initially focused on commercial vans and was expanded a year later to include self-driving technology and EVs"

GM WILL BUILD A ‘LARGE’ ELECTRIC SUV FOR ACURA IN 2024

"Honda quietly mentioned plans for "two large-sized EV models using GM's Ultium batteries," one for Honda and one for Acura, both for the 2024 model year. And they won't be built just from GM-sourced batteries, but by actual GM-employee hands, as confirmed by an Acura spokesperson to The Drive." writes James Gilboy: "Slated to be sold in North America first, these two electric crossovers will, according to a previous report, be built at two separate GM plants. The Honda model will reportedly enter production in 2023 in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, where the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox are made, and the Acura will allegedly follow in 202 at Spring Hill in Tennessee."

An email to The Drive: ""We are jointly developing two EV SUVs models using GM's Ultium batteries for the North American market as 2024 model year, one for the Honda brand and one for the Acura brand. As announced in April 2020, these will be produced by GM."

VOLVO, UBER JOIN CALL FOR EU-WIDE BAN ON GASOLINE"

"Volvo, Vattenfall and Uber are among 27 companies calling on the EU to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars by 2035 in order to accelerate the transition to electric cars." says S&P Global Platts Analytics: "The EU Commission is expected to propose new targets in June as part of its "Fit for 55" package of legislation, which is intended to put the EU on track to cut overall emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050. Germany, the region's biggest economy and largest oil market, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands plan to end sales of new ICE cars in 2030. Norway, Europe's electric car powerhouse, has the most ambitious plan to phase out combustion-engine cars from 2025. The UK in November brought forward a ban on sales of new gasoline and diesel cars to 2030 to help decarbonize the transport sector."

Now Tesla has started sending spec sheets of what they are now calling the ‘Powerwall +’ to new buyers" according to Fred at ElectreK:" The Powerwall+ now has a top power of 9.6 kW, which went up from 5 kW continuous and 7 kW peak. Tesla has a new inverter with integrated breaker that sits on top of the new Powerwall+ – giving the installation a new look".

"Sports car maker Lotus will build electric vehicles in the UK as part of a £2bn investment push aimed at massively increasing its production capacity. The Hethel-based firm yesterday announced that it would switch to selling only electric cars by 2028. Its last combustion engine car, the Emira, will launch this summer." says CityAM: "As part of the investment, the Telegraph reported that the firm would hire an extra 250 staff at its plant in Hethel, which currently has a workforce of 1,500.
