Show #1077

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 9th May. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to a new PATREON PARTNER JULIETTE SODERGREN!

Weekend Long Reads

AN OBITUARY FOR THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

"Some 136 years ago, German engineer Carl Benz built the first motor car with an internal combustion engine. The ‘Benz Patent Motor Car’ – actually a trike, a three-wheeler – was powered by a single cylinder, four-stroke engine producing 0.74bhp." says Wired: "Ironically, the ICE may well go the same way as the horse; no longer an everyday means of transport, instead a plaything of the rich, paraded at special events and raced. In just a few decades, children will look at them, wonder at the smell of oils and fuels, and jump back when an open-piped V12 barks into life."

ELECTROLYTE FORMULATIONS POINT TO NEXT-GEN BATTERIES

"The stability and performance of lithium-oxygen batteries look set to be vastly improved with a tailored electrolyte that could herald the next generation of rechargeable batteries." says The Engineer: "The lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery (or lithium-air battery), consisting of Li-metal and a porous conductive framework as its electrodes, releases energy from the reaction of oxygen from the air and lithium. The burgeoning technology has the potential to provide much greater energy storage than a conventional lithium-ion battery."

WHY NIO AND XPENG ARE MAKING A BEELINE FOR NORWAY

"Norway is fast becoming Chinese electric car start-ups’ key export market. There’s a reason for that: it’s the world leader in terms of EV uptake" says the South China MOrning Post: "Penetration of EVs in Norway is the highest worldwide, with pure electric cars making up over 54 per cent of overall new car sales. In Norway, no purchase and import taxes are imposed on EVs.  Buyers are also exempt from paying a 25 per cent value-added tax.  NIO hopes its “battery as a service” (BaaS) model, which allows customers to buy an electric car while subscribing to a separate battery-leasing plan for a fee, will help it gain an advantage in Europe."

GM CEO MARY BARRA TALKS CHEVY SILVERADO

"There are still few details about the upcoming electric pickup truck, and we're not even sure if it will carry the Silverado name. We do know it will be built on GM's Ultium platform, and it may share some features and design with the GMC Hummer EV electric truck." repotrs InsideEVs: " Barra said there's already strong demand for the Silverado EV. More specifically, she referred to the "strong response from commercial and government owners as a lot of fleet customers are looking to have zero emission vehicles." Barra made it clear that GM is highly skilled at producing full-size trucks, so now it just has to fit those trucks with an EV powertrain."

PLUG-IN MODELS NEARING 1 OF 10 NEW-VEHICLE SALES IN CALIFORNIA

"Plug-in vehicles—including battery-electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen fuel-cell cars—are nearing one in 10 new-car sales in California, according to a periodic update from industry group Veloz, referring to the latest data from the state." writes Green Car Reports: "Californians purchased 59,000 plug-in cars in the first quarter of 2021, accounting for more than a 9% market share for the quarter. The Tesla Model Y was the top-selling model in the state, at 15,265, with the Tesla Model 3 second, at 14,536. The Chevrolet Bolt EV was a distant third, at 5,252 units. The highest-ranked plug-in hybrid as the Toyota Prius Prime, in fourth place, at 4,081"

TESLA SUPERCHARGER NETWORK REACHES 25,000-CHARGER MILESTONE

"Tesla’s Supercharger network has now reached a total of 25,000 chargers – a big milestone for the fast-charging network. The Supercharger network is really the only global network of fast-charging stations." says electrek: "At the end of 2020, Tesla had over 20,000 charging stalls at over 2,100 Supercharging stations around the world. Now just a few months later, Tesla announced that the automaker has now 25,000 Superchargers around the world. Those 25,000 Supercharger stalls are at just over 2,700 Supercharger stations. Tesla launched a new Twitter account called ‘Tesla Charging’ that shares every new charging station coming online"

ELECTRIC CAR INSURANCE IN UK IS CHEAPER

"The average cost of insuring an electric car in the UK is £45 less than the cost of covering a petrol or diesel car, according to research from the website Comparethemarket.com. Analysis of annual premiums in the first three months of the year showed electric car drivers were charged an average of £566, while petrol and diesel drivers paid £611." according to The Guardian: "Dan Hutson, the head of motor insurance, at Comparethemarket.com, said the difference was explained by a range of factors, including electric cars having fewer complex moving parts to be damaged in an accident."

CHINA'S EMISSIONS SURPASS ALL DEVELOPED NATIONS COMBINED

" The distribution of global greenhouse gas emissions has reached an inflection point: China's emissions exceeded developed nations combined in 2019, a new Rhodium Group analysis concludes." says AXIOS: "Rhodium's Larsen notes China's per-capita rise stems from higher living standards, China's relatively fossil-intensive power mix and its export-focused manufacturing."

THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE FREEDOM ACT COULD PUT BILLIONS INTO A NATIONWIDE EV CHARGING NETWORK

"The Biden administration has made no secret that it is interested in pushing US transportation to an electric future, promising to spend vast sums of money on bringing electric vehicles into the US Government fleet as well as increasing the national EV charging infrastructure. It's a big deal." says CNET: " two members of Congress are pushing a new piece of legislation called the Electric Vehicle Freedom Act, and it goes even farther than President Biden's promises, according to a report published Wednesday by Automotive News. The Electric Vehicle Freedom Act seeks to build hundreds of thousands of electric-vehicle-charging stations around the US within five years and also seeks to shift government funding and tax breaks away from internal combustion vehicles and toward EVs"

QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS

MARK

I have a small business and was using Google and Facebook ads to find customers. In January, I found Russian ads on my both my Facebook and Google ad accounts and they were charging my payment methods. Then they used my PayPal, credit card and two Visa bank debit cards to order stuff at best buy, eBay and on my Google Store. All of these accounts had different passwords and two factor authentication. So how much data will I be sharing?

None.

ROBERT GRACE

As to privacy and what driving info that I transmit back to the car manufacturer, the issue is quite important to me. Attached is an image of a Ford Mach-E's very granular privacy options, which I think quite good.  As you can see, you can completely disconnect if you want to, so that the only driving info collected is that required by NHTSA for crash recall.

KERNEL

Giving up my data. Two thoughts:

1) I would want open-source evidence what data is collected and where it is stored.

2) I would want control to switch data sharing (and any associated benefits) on and off when I want

ANDY

Compared to all the data my cell phone gathers, I don’t worry about my car knowing how I’m driving. My issue would come with any internal cameras and if those were recorded.

CARLING FROM CALIFORNIA

I use Apple products because they have the power and size to stand up to attempts to access phones or cloud data, from law enforcement trying to strongarm into complying just because they want some data. But I don’t think a smaller car company would stand so firm, and I’m worried about how data could be misused if there was a record of where my car was.

TONY FROM BRISBANE

I share my location from my phone to the rest of my family so they know where I am. I have no issue with my car being tracked as long as I own that data.

SUSAN CHAMPION

As someone who drives a lot for a living I feel reassured that, should anything happen, there would be a record of where I am and what was happening around the car.

ROADIEDAVE

Despite all the misbehaviour around diesel emission, I actually trust the established car companies to follow all the correct protocols and keep my user data private. We have seen so many times the Silicon Valley startups take the attitude of moving fast and breaking things, but going the extra mile for security can be forgotten in favour of rapid growth.

ELECTRIC LIMITS

The question is where the car is made. Anything coming from China, regardless of where it’s sold, should be assumed will be programmed to send a certain amount of data back to Chinese powers. To assume anything is naïve and we’ve seen with mobile products over the years, software which sends info back to China when it goes online.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM

A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power.  I have never heard anything like a 20% rate of EV drivers being unhappy with electric. Would you ever go back? Yes, No and tell me why!

Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com
