Show #1080

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 12th May. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

PORSCHE MACAN EV TEASED

"The development of the all-electric Porsche Macan is finally moving from the drawing boards and computers to the real world. The Stuttgart-based automaker has just teased the EV SUV, prototypes of which are now heading outside Porsche’s proving grounds for the first time. " says Motor1: "The available photos show heavily camouflaged test cars that are heading towards Germany's public road network for real-world tests.  With the new teaser images, Porsche also reaffirmed the Macan EV will be launched on the market in 2023 and will become the brand’s first model to be underpinned by the PPE electric vehicle architecture."

CHINA APPROVES NATIONAL EV BATTERY SWAP STANDARD

"the country has just approved the first official swappable EV battery standard and safety guidelines, which are set to go into effect on Nov. 1, CNEVPost reported Monday. according to a statement made by Xin Guobin, vice minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, there are a few reasons, but the biggest are reduced cost to vehicle buyers, cheaper charging by charging during off-peak hours and customers being able to choose the size of battery they need on a given day." writes CNET.com: "Companies like NIO and BAIC have advanced the new battery swap standard, but it's Geely that seems to be sprinting ahead, based on a recent YouTube video showing off its 1-minute automated battery swapping station."

HARLEY-DAVIDSON IS TURNING LIVEWIRE INTO ITS OWN BRAND

"A couple years ago, Harley-Davidson built its first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, to largely positive reviews. Since we now live in a world created by constant brand consultant input, however, the company has announced they are branching out LiveWire into an entire separate electric motorcycle sub-brand" says Gear Patrol: "Harley-Davidson says LiveWire will "draw on its DNA as an agile disruptor from the lineage of Harley-Davidson," whatever that means. Per Harley, the new LiveWire entity will have a virtual headquarters paired with "initial hubs" in Silicon Valley and Harley-Davidson's home, Milwaukee. Livewire will launch its first new branded electric motorcycle on July 8th. LiveWire will target new buyers in a younger urban market. That's a substantially different buyer from the people who purchase Harley-Davidson's bread-and-butter touring bikes."

SUBARU’S FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE IS CALLED THE SOLTERRA

"For Subaru diehards holding out for an electric vehicle, the wait is almost over. The Japanese automaker just announced new details about its first-ever EV, which is set to hit the streets in 2022. Subaru will call its first EV the Solterra, a fitting name for a brand synonymous with outdoor adventures and you know, the sun and the Earth. Also fittingly, Subaru’s first full-fledged EV will be an SUV that ships with the manufacturer’s well-regarded all-wheel-drive capabilities." writes Techcrunch: "The Solterra is built on a new platform the company is developing in partnership with Toyota, which the latter company will use for its impossibly named bZ4X crossover. Subaru has only released two teaser images so far, but given that the new SUV will share DNA with the Toyota bZ4X, Subaru’s offering will likely look like a toned-down, less aggressively styled version of Toyota’s forthcoming futuristic electric crossover."

ELECTRIC SEVEN DUE IN 2023 AS FIRST CATERHAM EV

"Caterham is working to safeguard the future of the Seven in the face of looming homologation and legislative hurdles – and is set to launch its landmark first EV in the coming years. the priority is to ensure that any electric version of the diminutive two-seater “rides and handles like a Caterham”." syas Autocar: "the ‘EV Seven’ will be developed with a focus on keeping weight down in an effort to preserve the model’s trademark agility and pace. The suspension geometry and other aspects of the chassis will be recalibrated to mitigate the extra heft of the battery and electric motors, for example, and it will go without the weighty associated systems that are common on mainstream EVs, such as regenerative braking. a racing version would need to be equipped with rapid charging or an “interchangeable battery” but the road car – which, like the current Seven, will be geared towards occasional use – is less likely to receive these technologies."

STAR-STUDDED LINE-UP TO CONTEST FIA RX2E DEMO

A legendary line-up of rallycross talent will go head-to-head during a one-off FIA RX2e Championship demonstration competition at the upcoming RallyX Nordic meeting at Höljes. The event will provide an opportunity to see the cutting-edge electric vehicles – which are set to face off in the first-ever FIA electric rallycross championship this season – race wheel-to-wheel.

Multiple World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm will join the likes of World Rallycross title-winners Johan Kristoffersson and Timmy Hansen in the inaugural Superteam Challenge while RX2e test driver Oliver Eriksson, who is a double RX2 champion and 2020 RallyX Nordic Supercar title-winner, is also in the mix.

RX Lites title-winners Kevin Hansen and Kevin Eriksson are also in the talent pool while World RX race winners Andreas Bakkerud and Sebastian Eriksson complete the line-up of participating drivers.

The electric vehicles, which generate 250kW (335bhp) of power and up to 510Nm torque, will be showcased in four heats and two finals as the world’s best off-road racers do battle at Höljes.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM

A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power.  I have never heard anything like a 20% rate of EV drivers being unhappy with electric. Would you ever go back? Yes, No and tell me why!

Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com
