HYUNDAI IONIQ 6 ELECTRIC SEDAN SPIED TESTING IN GERMANY

"Hyundai reportedly took the Ioniq 6 back to the drawing board for some last minute design changes. We therefore don’t know if the final production interpretation of the model will look like this prototype or if it will even more closely resemble the stunning Prophecy concept that previewed it." asks InsideEVs: "while previous prototypes were spotted with cameras instead of regular side mirrors, these newer prototypes featured the latter. Hyundai is building the Ioniq 6 on it E-GMP dedicated electric vehicle platform and thus it will surely share many components with the Ioniq 5. However, the largest available battery will be bigger than the Ioniq 5’s 72.6 kWh pack and it could be closer to 100 kWh (with around 300 miles of range), according to some rumors."

VOLKSWAGEN REVEALS PHEV PLANS WITH >100 KM RANGE

""In the course of a presentation of its current plug-in hybrid models, Volkswagen has given an outlook on its upcoming PHEV strategy. A new generation of plug-in hybrid drives is expected to be used from 2023." says electrive :"the battery capacity and thus the electric range are to increase significantly – the latter to around 100 kilometres.  Volkswagen’s PHEVs will in future have a fast-charging option with a CCS connection, enabling significantly faster charging processes than with the existing single-phase onboard chargers with only 3.6 kW charging power. Media reports indicate that the AC onboard charger could also be upgraded. From the 3.6 kW single-phase mentioned at the beginning to 11 kW three-phase"

VW WASTES NO TIME JOSTLING FOR GERMANY’S NEW POLITICAL PARADIGM

"On Monday morning, the man who prevailed in Germany’s race to succeed Angela Merkel as chancellor called on potential partners to join him in a new government as soon as possible. Olaf Scholz, of the center-left Social Democrats, appealed to the environmentally minded Greens and pro-business Free Democrats to back a three-way coalition following his narrow victory in Sunday’s election." reports Bloomberg: "Just a few hours later, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess took to Twitter to sketch out the car giant’s vision for a new government. His 10-point wish list includes calls to expand renewables, curb coal, raise the price of CO2 and scrap subsidies for gasoline and diesel fuel. VW’s CEO openly trying to speed up the demise of the internal combustion engine would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. the SPD has repeatedly called on the industry to be more ambitious when it comes to phasing out the combustion engine. The party was instrumental in denying the industry’s request for a scrapping bonus for older gasoline and diesel vehicles at the height of the pandemic last year."

POWER CUTS MAY STIFLE CHINESE DEMAND FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

"China’s power cuts could put a dent in the booming electric vehicle (EV) sector as the suspension of charging stations in parts of the country keeps some battery-powered cars off the roads, analysts said." according to South China Morning Post: "The power blackouts in more than 10 provinces across the mainland are likely to further sap drivers’ appetite for EVs in regions where their take-up is already low. “In northeast China, electric cars have been greeted with a lukewarm response for many years,” said Zhang Fan, a car insurance broker in Jilin province. “The power cuts could further siphon off buying interest in electricity-powered vehicles.”"

CHINA'S CARMAKERS ARE MAKING CHEAPER ELECTRIC VEHICLES

"As the world enters the era of the electric vehicle (EV), are we about to see a sea change in the identity and makeup of Europe’s streets?  The quality, and, more importantly, the affordability of Chinese EVs is becoming a situation that is harder for European manufacturers to ignore with each passing year, and it could be just a matter of time before the market becomes flooded with imports from China." says Euronews.com: "According to a report from automotive data analysis firm Jato Dynamics, the average price of a new electric car in China since 2011 has fallen from €41,800 to €22,100. While China’s significant manufacturing capabilities have never been in doubt, the question was whether it would be able to innovate to the same degree as its Western counterparts. That question has been answered in the form of their batteries and the technology they are able to implement inside their vehicles (although parts of the industry are still subsidised by the Chinese government)."
