HUAWEI JOINS CHINA'S ELECTRIC CAR RACE IN COMPETITION WITH TESLA

- Less than a week after Chinese electric car start-up Nio announced its latest competitor to Tesla, Huawei released details on a vehicle with specs it claims beat the Model Y.

- Chinese tech giant Huawei is best known for its telecommunications products and smartphones, and says it will not make cars on its own. But it has been working with automakers on car technology such as autonomous driving.

- The first car with Huawei’s HarmonyOS operating system will be the Aito M5, a car that runs on both electricity and fuel, Richard Yu, executive director and CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group, said Thursday at the company’s winter product launch event.

- Deliveries are set to begin around Feb. 20 after the Lunar New Year

Tesla Faces Stiff Competition in China As Huawei Enters Electric Car Race

- The Harmony OS is an Android-based operating system developed by Huawei as an alternative to Google’s operating system. The OS has evolved to include as many categories and products as competing smartphones.

- The Post-subsidy prices of the Aito M5 begin at $39,063, which is considerably lower than the new Tesla Model Y at $60,440.

- During the winter launch, Yu claimed that Huawei’s Aito M5 offers better peak power and range than Tesla’s Model Y. Unlike the Model Y, the Aito M5 comes with a gas tank that helps extend the driving range when the battery runs out, so it's a plug-in hybrid.

TESLA TO RELEASE "SIGNIFICANT" AUTOPILOT IMPROVEMENTS TO NON-US OWNERS

- Tesla aims to release significant Autopilot improvements to vehicles outside the United States by March 2022. The timing for the release of Tesla’s Autopilot improvements seems fitting given Europe’s dedication to increasing road safety in the next few years through a series of regulations requiring the installment of vehicle safety systems in vehicles.

- Tesla Autopilot users in Europe have complained “about incorrect speed limits and not getting to the correct speed before you can cross the sign.” Musk responded to the tweet, saying that the Tesla Autopilot team aimed for significant improvements for owners outside the United States around March, based on regulatory approvals.

- Next year, Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning Systems, Intelligent Speed Assistance, Advanced Emergency Braking, and Emergency Lane Keeping Assists will be mandatory. Then by 2024, every car sold in the EU must be fitted with the technologies mentioned above.

- The Regulation also offers Tesla a simpler, straightforward guide for getting regulatory approvals in parts of Europe, specifically countries in the EU. Trying to comply with regulations in each European nation might be more complex than following one set of rules for several countries.

TESLA MODEL 3: CHARGING TO 100% CAN BE THE NORM FOR 272-MILE LFP VERSION

- Tesla is providing a recommendation to owners of new base 2022 Model 3 RWD electric cars equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells that is something of a gift in usable range: Charge to 100% on a regular basis.

- The automaker began using LFP cells for Chinese-market vehicles, but has been hinting at a broader shift for some time. Tesla said in October that LFP cells would be used in all standard-range vehicles globally, and in the United States it's just starting with a new rear-wheel drive base Model 3 for 2022.

- According to a revised Model 3 owner's manual for the U.S., drivers can see if their cars have LFP battery cells by opening the charging menu on the touchscreen and selecting "Set Limit," or opening the charging section of the Tesla app and dragging the slider. Cars with LFP batteries will show "50%" and "100%" settings, while other versions "Daily" and "Trip" settings.

- The different guidelines for LFP cars include the recommendation that Model 3 owners keep the charge limit set to 100%, and actually charge their cars to 100% at least once a week, per the owner's manual. If a car is parked for more than a week, Tesla recommends that owners drive normally and charge to 100% at their earliest convenience.

- With a 272-mile range and 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds, the new base model offers more range than the Standard Range Plus, but with slower acceleration.

GENERAL MOTORS ANNOUNCES EV COMPONENT SALES STRATEGY

- General Motors has laid out plans to begin offering electric vehicle component sets for upfitting applications, which it says will help “meet the growing demand for zero-emissions technology,” in industries including aviation, automotive, marine and construction.

- The automaker plans to roll out its EV components strategy through its existing GM Powered Solutions arm. The automaker says GM Powered Solutions “will begin introducing tailored electric component sets,” in the near future, which will allow customers to integrate the latest GM EV technology into custom applications.

- GM Powered Solutions will begin offering GM electric motors, batteries and other components necessary for converting the powertrains of fleet vehicles, construction equipment and other machines from fuel-powered to battery-electric.

POLESTAR 2 NOW RUNS THE VIVALDI WEB BROWSER

- Electric-performance brand Polestar has released a full-scale Vivaldi web browser for fully-electric Polestar 2. Drivers and passengers will have access to the same powerful web browser features as the desktop and mobile versions right from the vehicle's infotainment screen.

- The Vivaldi browser runs on Android Automotive OS and is the first web browser available for Google's new Android Automotive OS, which also made its debut in the Polestar 2.

- The in-vehicle version of Vivaldi was developed for Polestar 2 by its team in Norway. In addition to being a full-scale web browser,  the Vivaldi app brings extensive browser functionality to the Polestar 2's 11-inch center display running Android Automotive OS.

- There are some caveats for using the Vivaldi web browser in Polestar 2. For one, files cannot be downloaded and the browser can only be used when the vehicle is parked for added safety. Streaming video content is also disrupted if the vehicle is put in motion. However, the incoming audio will continue to stream once the vehicle is put in drive.
