NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: ELECTRIC VEHICLES, NOT LUXURY CARS, DOMINATE

- the New York International Auto Show will open to the public on Friday, April 15, at Manhattan’s Javits Center and will run through April 24

- The format is more compelling than in years past, given the supply chain crisis that has severely delayed deliveries to dealerships, not to mention markups as high as $100,000 over manufacturer's suggested retail price for luxury cars and SUVs.

- “Auto shows are still highly relevant in the same way that dealerships are still highly relevant,” says Erin Kerrigan, founder and managing director of Kerrigan Advisors, a consulting firm. “Consumers still like to touch and feel a new car before they purchase it.”

- F-150 Lightning, revealed via video feed almost a year ago, will appear just weeks before its first deliveries.

- Chevrolet Silverado EV, a rig first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. It’s not due out until 2023, so expect GM to pull out all the stops to pique interest

- Hyundai Motor Co. may present one of the show’s few surprises. The company promises to unveil a new production vehicle

JAPANESE CAR GIANT HONDA TARGETS EV EXPANSION, EARMARKS BILLIONS FOR R&D

- Honda plans to invest around 5 trillion yen ($39.9 billion) in electrification and software technologies over the next 10 years, with the Japanese automotive giant aiming to launch 30 electric vehicle models worldwide by 2030.

- In a statement Tuesday, the company said approximately 3.5 trillion yen would go toward research and development expenses, with 1.5 trillion yen focused on investments.

- Honda said it would target an EV production volume of over 2 million units per year in 2030

- Honda said it would look to set up what it called a “dedicated EV plant” in the Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Wuhan.

- last week, Honda and GM announced they would develop a series of affordable electric vehicles based on a new global platform.

HONDA HOPES YOU'LL FORGET ABOUT TESLA WITH $40 BILLION EV INVESTMENT

HONDA TO LAUNCH 30 EV MODELS BY 2030

- Honda is planning to introduce an insanely cheap mini-EV model for commercial use at the $8,000 (1 million yen) price range in Japan by 2024. After that, Honda will start to roll out personal use mini-EVs and EV SUVs, the company said. Honda is offering this car for commercial use first because Japan lacks the charging infrastructure needed to roll out wide-scale EV deployment

- By the same year in North America, Honda also plans to introduce two mid-to-large size EV models – a Honda Prologue SUV and an Acura SUV – which are currently being developed with General Motors at prices that are cost-competitive with internal combustion engine vehicles.

- The Honda e: Architecture, which the company plans to introduce in 2026, will be an EV platform that includes both a hardware and software layer and is cloud-connected.Like many other automakers, Honda sees the potential for the software-defined vehicle to help bring in recurrent revenue through third-party applications. That’s why it’s building an application layer on top of the vehicle operating system, which can be continuously updated over the air
