In the Catholic Church, it's common to see images and depictions of Jesus Christ, His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Joseph, the saints a ND angels. The commonest of all these is the crucifix which is a cross bearing the image of Jesus crucified. The use of images dates back to the 6th century, and it's original purpose was to portray in pictures what is written in the gospels. Written gospels were for the literate while pictures and depictions were for the illiterate believers. The scripture condemned the making of images to be used as idols. God himself prescribed the making of several images such as the Ark of the Covenant and the bronze serpent. When these images are blessed, they become sacramental and help the users to contemplate the unknown.
