The Italian scientist Galileo observed a swinging chandelier, and realized that there was a certain cycle to it: no matter the size of the swing, it took the same amount of time. He used this realization to build a clock with a pendulum.
But this realization of how time has cycles in nature goes back before Galileo -- early sundials also made use of this idea. And we can also see it overnight, over the months, over the years and over millennia.
