The Lab was founded by Sissel Tolaas in January 2004. It is a research lab for smell/olfactory and smell-communication topics. The Lab is situated in Berlin, connected to and part of the Tolaas studio/office. The studio is a space where interdisciplinary projects are developed, researched and executed. These projects all involve smell, odour and fragrance in various ways, shapes or forms as part of the conceptual, scientific and creative way of working and approaching the reality we live in. Tolaas has been working/researching and experimenting intensively with the topic of smell since 1990. She has developed a wide range of revolutionary projects with smells & fragrances etc. based upon her own knowledge - chemical science, mathematic, linguistics and languages, and visual art etc. – and using her worldwide connections developed through numerousprojectsandtravels. The Lab is supported by IFF. IFF provides all necessary ingredients and technical equipment. The Lab is a research situation where highly qualified professionals from different disciplines meet with Tolaas for the purpose of creating new and innovative approaches to the topic of “smell” in our society. Companies/institutes/universities and individual clients are attracted by this unique setup of a ‘research & conceptual approach’ smell/olfactory Lab. Tolaas has built up a wide circle of international connections through her extensive networking activities. She is very capable at collaborating intensively with and among other disciplines. The Lab is a “station of dialogues,” in other words a place to establish a continuous dialogue between IFF experts and a range of other experts. The goal of the Lab is to change the existing approach to “our noses & smells and the process of smelling.” NOTHING STINKS, ONLY THINKING MAKES IT SO!??CURRICULUM VITAE?Born in Norway.
