The success of the 1994 Oscar Award winning film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which told the story of three drag queens making the trek across Australia’s outback, helped ignite a modern style of drag filled with campy, self-deprecating fun and trans inclusivity.

The film was turned into a Tony award winning Broadway musical and now our local Pride Films and Plays is putting it on featuring Honey West who, as far as we know, is the first trans actor to play the role of the grand dame, Bernadette.

Joining us today is the lovely Honey West, who has been a hit on the cabaret circuit since her debut in her 1990 one-woman show, A Taste of Honey.

Listen as we chat with the legendary Honey West about her adventures in comedy, musical theater and the early days of LGBT radio.

➤ A walk down LGBT Chicago theater: Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, Diva Diaries and the Wizard of AIDS.

➤ Her longtime friendship with Transparent actor Alexandra Billings.

➤ What’s Oprah’s friendship like with the raunchy transgender actress Chili Pepper?
