Part of the reason we started the Fly Maui podcast was to begin building an audio scrapbook in a digital format of our adventures and experiences for our family. One thing I wish I had was a recording of my pilot grandmother telling about her flight training, air races and involvement with the 99s. The only thing we have are scrapbooks that she made, which we found after she passed away. One thing I found last year in one of these scrapbooks are 2 speeches she gave about her flying. I read these on a recording this past summer, and wanted to share these with our listeners.

I don’t cry very often, but by the time I read through them, I was bawling like a baby.  Apparently one of the speeches was delivered to mostly non-pilots in attempt to explain the basic principles of flight and encourage others to take a step of faith and take flying lessons. In it she said, “When I tell you a little child can do it, I know what I’m talking about. Our three year old granddaughter (ME!) used to love to fly our Cessna 172 and would gleefully make it go up and down and turn.”

This part really got to me. Because that was me, and little did she know that someday decades later after she was gone, that this same little girl would become a pilot herself and still gleefully like to make her airplane go up and down and turn. Besides being with John and the boys, there’s not much more in the world that brings me such joy as being able to fly.

Let’s see what my grandmother, Virginia Proctor, had to say about flying several decades ago.
