It is typically depicted that in most marriages, there is a saver and a spender - the one who handles the budget and the one who spends all of the money. The reality is that it is not usually black and white. There is quite a bit of grey area, especially when two spouses have been working together for a while to improve the overall family finances. Typically what will happen is that one spouse will begin to see and agree with the other, and the two will naturally move closer together as far as their goals are concerned.

When we automatically label our spouses and ourselves, we take away the possibility to come together in order to find common ground and work towards eventually realizing the proper plan for getting out of debt. Chances are, if you have a spouse who is sort-of on board with your plans to get out of debt, they will likely never align perfectly with your plans. It's supposed to be that way, because we all come from different backgrounds. Some of us have been raised in an environment where spending and using credit cards was the norm. Others have been raised in an environment to save every penny. Meshing these two together can obviously be quite challenging.

We want to make sure not to alienate our spouse or attempt to get them on board to get out of debt by force. Instead, you should be cultivating your spouse's own interest and curiosity to be on board by practicing fair give-and-take strategies, patience, and understanding. When we do this, we lessen the money arguments and money fights in our marriages and move towards accomplishing a much more important goal of getting out of debt and getting into prosperity.
