Rule number one when it comes to working with your spouse is to be kind to your spouse. Both of you must follow this rule, otherwise things will become turbulent, and there's a much higher possibility that the two of you will argue or fight. This is true whether you are working on your monthly budget together or something as simple as deciding on where to go out to dinner.
Realize that your spouse is going to think differently than you do, and that is completely normal. You need to have enough give and take in your marriage so that you are able to eventually mesh together and become one. Being rude or not respecting each other will only put the other person on the defensive. It will split the two of you apart, not bring you together.
Insults, put-downs, let-downs, or any other negativity will not help either one of you. While you may have your differences, your best course of action is to try to see each other's point of view. Empathy and kindness can go a long way towards bringing you closer to your spouse, and when your spouse sees that you are taking this stance rather than being on guard and ready for a fight, it's highly likely that your spouse will eventually do the same. It's when you are at this point that the both of you win.
