Help to build a healthy financial foundation with your children by showing them how they can earn their own money. From there, help them to connect the dots when it comes to the various uses of money. Kids are much more likely to be attentive to our teachings that we provide to them as parents, even from a very young age. We have a golden opportunity right now with our children to teach them and guide them in the way that they should go financially.
We can teach them how to save for something that they want. We can encourage them and praise them for turning down candy and gum in the spirit of saving up for what it is that they are currently focused on. By doing this, we'll reinforce the importance of perseverance and patience, and they'll also learn that they don't need to get something right away just because they want it now. They'll learn that they can take the time to save up cash for something that they want rather than defaulting to an immediate purchase through some form of debt (once they are older, of course).
Take advantage of the limited stage time that you have with your children as a receptive audience. Show them how to save, give, and spend appropriately, and they'll take these lessons and establish a foundation that will benefit them for years to come.
