So after eschewing The Libertines during their heyday because of the Pete Doherty circus, involving among others, Kate Moss, we listened to their music on the show. After that, we decided that they were, in fact, great. As a consequence of coming to them later, it was easier to recognise their brilliance. It turns out that Pete is something of a sage too. Despite being smashed most of the time he has come out with some excellent quotes over the years. Here's just a few: One minute I'm waiting for Kate to arrive to join me in the Jacuzzi for a romantic evening. The next thing I can remember is doing cold turkey in a vomit-filled cell. I've got a fierce passion for politics but I can't stand the smarmy, hypocritical upper-middle-class dictator nation that prevails and has always prevailed in this country. I'm up for petrol bombers, mate, and fighting in the streets. Broken glass. It's just like glitter, isn't it? I'm 300 grand in debt. Why do you think I'm going out with Kate Moss? The Libertines in 2016 playing Festival des Vieilles Charrues The Hot 8 Brass Band So as mentioned in the show, these guys celebrated their twentieth anniversary in 2015. The band was formed after the amalgamation of two different brass bands. The Looney Tunes Brass Band and The High Steppers Brass Band joined forces. As a result of this, The Hot 8 Brass Band was born. In their twenty-plus year career they have toured the globe with their rambunctious style of music, blending jazz, hip hop and funk. However, it hasn't all been beer and skittles. There have been three members lost to gun crime along the way, all between the ages of 17 and 25. Jacob Johnson, the 17-year-old trumpet player was found dead at home, the victim of an execution-style killing (1996).Joseph "Shotgun Joe" Williams was shot dead by police in controversial circumstances. According to New Orleans Police Department the 22-year-old trombone player had been stopped for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle when he suddenly reversed toward a police car and officer. The Police then opened fire killing Williams (2004). Several eyewitnesses claim the police shot Williams when he was unarmed and hand his hands in the air.Drummer Dinerral "Dick" Shavers was killed by a shot to the back of his head whilst driving with his family (2006). Apparently the bullet was intended for his 15-year-old stepson. Shavers continued driving after the shot but was later found lying in the road next to the car.
