Chinese Lesson Blurb: 孔子曰 Confucius says - a podcast by Fun Learning Chinese

 
When my Chinese tutor was a young girl in school, she remembers being taught about Confucius. When Confucius was quoted, they were always supposed to use the ancient way of saying “says” which is 曰 ㄩㄝ (yuē).

Among themselves, the school children would joke:

 

孔子不會說，

(孔子)❶(不)(會)(說)

(ㄎㄨㄥˇ  ㄗˇ)(ㄅㄨˊ)(ㄏㄨㄟˋ)(ㄔㄨㄛ)

(kǒng zǐ)(bú)(huì)(shuō)

(Confucius)(not)(will)(to say, to speak, to explain)

Confucius will not say,
