Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 11:23-34
In the early church it is apparent that the observance of communion included an actual meal. The believers would eat together which became known as the Agape or Love Feast (17-22). They would then worship using the bread and the cup. This was following the Lord’s example (25) “after supper”.
We must always distinguish between what is described in the Bible and what prescribed in the Bible.
The observance of the bread and the cup are commanded. Paul calls this observance “the Lord’s Supper” (20), “the Lord’s Table (1 Corinthians 10:21), and “communion” (1 Corinthians 10:16). It is called by some the Eucharist from the Greek word translated “when He had given thanks” (24). Most conservative Bible scholars believe that Paul wrote 1 Corinthians before any of the Gospels were written. This then is the earliest teaching on the Lord’s institution of Communion. The communion service is outlined by three perspectives that are especially relevant this morning. The passing of another year causes many of us to look back to the past, reevaluate in the present and hopefully make preparations for the future. These three perspectives are outlined for us in this passage concerning the observance of communion.
