Genesis 2:15-25
? The divine design of the family is under attack (18).
God commanded Adam (20) to name the animals as an object lesson. One aspect of being in God’s image is that man was created for relationships. God was showing Adam that there was not another living being on earth like him. Adam and Eve did not evolve out of the animal kingdom. They were created by God as mature complete male and female human beings. God formed Adam from “the dust of the ground” (2:7). God formed Eve from the flesh and bone of Adam. Note the phrase “and He brought her to the man” (22). The LORD God performed the first marriage ceremony. Marriage is the good creation of God.
? Social contract theory is attempting to redefine marriage and family. Jesus Himself upheld the biblical definition of marriage, Matthew 19:4-6. People who have rejected the belief in a Creator believe that marriage is the result of cultural evolution. Social structures and sexual differences are not ordained by God but are inventions of the human will. Since they were invented by man they can be reinvented by man.
? The basic tenet of social contract theory is that no human being can have an obligation to which they have not consented.
