Mark 14:12-26
Lord willing in six weeks we will be celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. We will be looking at the events of the last days of Jesus on earth as we move toward Easter. This morning we are starting with events leading up to and including the last night of Jesus’ earthly ministry. The events of that night occurred in an upper room somewhere in Jerusalem.
Two of Jesus’ disciples were sent to prepare for the last official Passover celebration (12-16).
The religious leaders are looking for a way to kill Jesus. Judas has gone to them to arrange to betray Jesus. What better place to trap Jesus than in an upper room in the city? Jesus sent Peter and John, Luke 22:8, to prepare for the Passover meal. The other disciples would not know the location until they arrived. This occurred on the Thursday before what is known as Good Friday. Good Friday is a reference to the day Jesus was crucified. There is apparent confusion in a comparison of the Gospel accounts concerning this Passover. Historical records reveal that the Jews who were from Galilee in the north marked the Passover day from sunrise to sunrise. Jesus and His disciples were mostly Galileans. The Judean Jews from Jerusalem and the south marked the Passover day from sunset to sunset. This reveals how Jesus could celebrate the Passover on Thursday night and yet be crucified at 3:00 PM on Friday when the Judean Jews were slaughtering their lambs in the Temple for their Passover. Both celebrations were authorized and legitimate at this time.
Jesus and His disciples gathered in the evening to celebrate the Passover.
