Last Sunday we looked at Jesus’ words to Nicodemus in John 3 that “you must be born again.” We saw that this is the doctrine of regeneration. Regeneration is a sovereign work of God totally apart from human effort. When the Gospel is proclaimed the Holy Spirit gives life and faith is awakened in the heart of the spiritually dead sinner. Believing is a consequence of the new birth. That believing faith brings the sinner into union with the Son of God. Paul gives proof (9-20) of what Jesus revealed in John 3:18, “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” Everyone outside of Christ is under the condemnation of God. (19) “...every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” No person based upon their own merit will able to defend themselves before God. How is it possible for sinful men and women to be united to a Holy God?
