Church membership is implied by Paul’s imagery of the body (27).
Paul is the only one who uses the imagery of the church as a body. It has no Old Testament equivalent. This emphasizes our unique position in Christ as New Testament Christians. Paul wrote this to a local church. 1 Corinthians 1:2, “To the church of God which is at Corinth...” This imagery makes no sense if Paul was only speaking of the universal or invisible church consisting of all Christians everywhere.
