We began this series by considering Jesus’ words to Nicodemus in John 3 that “you must be born again.” We saw that this is the doctrine of regeneration which speaks of new life. We then looked at the doctrine of justification. This speaks of our new standing before a holy God. We also referenced the doctrine of imputation. The Greek word is logizomai which is an accounting term. It means “to apply to one’s account.” In justification a double imputation occurs. 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Our great debt of sin was put on Jesus’ account and Jesus’ righteousness was put on our account.
Before salvation we were the living dead.
(1) “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins”
Paul is describing the condition of all of the unsaved. They are dead spiritually. They possess no spiritual life. They are separated from God. They can do nothing to please God.
Isaiah 64:6, “But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags.” This describes our self-righteousness. What must our sins appear to be before a holy God? The dead do not need resuscitation but resurrection.
The living dead are dominated by the world, the devil and the flesh.
(2-3) “in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.”
Three forces encourage the unsaved in their disobedience to God. They are dominated by the values and attitudes of the world system, the culture. They believe the lies of Satan the father of lies. Evolution and atheism are among the devil’s most potent deceptions. The unsaved are deceived because they are depraved.
The doctrine of total depravity means that human nature is thoroughly corrupted and sinful as a result of the fall in Genesis 3.
Their actions are sinful because their appetites are sinful.
The unsaved are dominated, depraved and doomed.
(3) “…and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.”
We have seen that the unsaved are under the condemnation of God, John 3:18 & Romans 3:19. God however is staying the execution of the sentence upon all mankind because He is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance”, 2 Peter 3:9.
At the moment of salvation we are given new life.
