The Bible does not say that they were three in number, were kings and rode camels. The designation “wise men” is the Greek word magos. The better English rendering is “magi” from which we get our word magician. What can be known about them comes from the Old Testament and historical records. We need to remind ourselves that we are not dealing with superstition but with real history. The magi were an ancient priestly tribe of people from among the Medes. The magi were masters of astrology and astronomy.
