“What’s wrong?” I hurried over to sit next to him as he flopped on the bed.

He remained silent.

“Well?” I demanded.

“Oh Sapphira.” He moaned.

“Ananias! What’s wrong?” I was irritated by his sour attitude and lack of speech.

He exhaled and buried his head in his hands, “Our investments have finally paid off, and there are so many things that I want to buy. But...”

“Yes, I know all that.” I said feeling confused. “...And now we’re rich and you, dear husband, can have anything you want!” I clapped in glee.

“No! No I can’t!” With a groaned he stood up and started to pace across our small bedroom chamber.

“Did the deal fall through?” I asked – a lump choking my throat.

Ananias paused, paced some more, and wrung his hands in despair.

He was beginning to scare me.

“Ananias, what’s the matter?” I asked, feeling nervous.

“Remember how Peter and John are collecting money to spread the gospel and help the poor?” he paused.

“So?” I frowned. “What’s the problem?”

“Sapphira,” he sighed, “We promised them, and God, that we would donate all of the profits from this sale to the church!”

I gasped, now I remembered!

Acts 5:1-10

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
