Intergenerational Trauma
Intergenerational trauma is defined as the transmission of historical oppression and its negative consequences across generations.
An emerging line of research is exploring how historical and cultural traumas affect survivors’ children for generations to come. Intergenerational trauma is present in many communities of today’s society. Just a few examples: Indigenous communities, Black Communities, and holocaust survivors.
Intergenerational trauma, or transgenerational trauma, is what happens when untreated trauma-related stress experienced by survivors is passed on to second and subsequent generations. It can be a big trauma like slavery or small trauma like dieting.
In today’s episode we welcome back one of our favorite experts, Dr. Carolyn Ross MD to teach us about intergenerational trauma. Dr. Carolyn Ross is an MD, pioneer in the use of Integrative Medicine for the treatment of Eating Disorders, Obesity, and Addiction.
Dr. Ross recently completed a TED X talk on Intergenerational trauma considers her own experience with segregation as a black woman in the South of the USA.
