Talking about death and grief is a bummer. You may feel like skipping this topic altogether. But guess what? We’ve all been grieving this year, because we’ve all lost something that was important to us during the pandemic. Maybe you missed visiting family, date nights, or going to school. Perhaps you lost a job, or a sense of financial stability.

The term “little losses” has recently made a debut to describe all the things we've lost or had to give up since the COVID-19 pandemic started. But the thing is, when we don’t take the time to acknowledge and feel the grief that comes with these losses, we can’t accept them and move forward. We get stuck in grief, in the same way that some people get stuck grieving when someone they love dies.

Lower Columbia Hospice social worker Jeanette Johnson counsels with people at the end of their lives and their families. Helping people work through grief is a big part of her job. In this episode, "Hands on Health" host Felicia Struve and Jeanette explore the process of grief, how to recognize it in yourself and others, what we can do to help, and the silver-lining of grief.
