November is National Family Caregiver Month, when we take time to officially recognize and give praise and support to the 78 million people in the United States who dedicate their (often unpaid) time to care for a family member in need.

Most of the time, people providing daily care in the home are untrained family members who learn “on the fly.” Registered Nurse Abbie Johnson from Lower Columbia Hospice, joins us for Episode #4 of "Hands on Health." She shares some key skills and principles for family caregivers and the people who support them, including:

  • Safety precautions for oxygen use,

  • Preventing aspiration when feeding someone and giving water or medications,

  • Why pillows are your best friend,

  • Patience with behavior changes, and

  • Giving yourself some grace.
