IOWA CITY, Iowa – Megan Gustafson captured the imaginations of young girls throughout the Iowa fan base with her exploits the last several seasons. The Hawkeye center won the Big Ten’s Player of the Year Award last winter in dominating fashion.

On Senior Day in March, a Northwestern assistant sat on the bench in Carver-Hawkeye Arena having been entrusted with her team’s scouting report on how to stop Gustafson. Thirty four points and 12 rebounds later, the coach understood what it was like when she had dominated opponents on the same court 20 years earlier.Tangela Smith excited the Hawkeye faithful when she won the conference player of the year award in 1998. Opposing teams were preparing to stop the unstoppable then as well.

We caught up with Smith for our latest Hawkeye History Podcast. The Chicago native, who will be inducted into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame next month, dished on Gustafson, her time at Iowa, her 15-year WNBA career and playing professionally all over the world. Please give it a listen.
