     SUMMARY:

In this episode, Duane talks about his experience both as a combat veteran and a clinical mental health counselor, and outlines eight things that he believes that a veteran wants their mental health professional to know before working with them.

As a professional counselor and combat veteran, one of the most rewarding aspects of the work that Duane does is helping other veterans come to a point of awareness and understanding about their experiences in the military, and setting the stage for change if that’s what the veteran is willing to do. Working with any client can be challenging, but veterans can be especially difficult because of the warrior culture that they are used to. This podcast talks about eight different points that he believes veterans would like their mental health counselor to know before working with them. IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:

The eight things a veteran wants their mental health counselor to know are:

  1. I’m not sure this is necessary

  2. I’m really, really trusting you

  3. The only reason I’m here is because I’m tired of feeling the way I do

  4. I really want to be able to talk…

  5. …but have no intention of doing so…

  6. …and will shut down if I feel like you’re judging me.

  7. I don’t think that you’ll be able to understand what I experienced

  8. I have no desire to be coddled, revered, or bullied.LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:
