Lyn meets Fidel Beauhill, the founder of The Modern Man Club, a men-only Facebook community, and external community initiative that promotes good mental and physical health for men, including promoting healthy relationships.

Lyn and Fidel discuss the recent trend of masculinity being seen as a negative personal attribute, the effect this is having upon modern men, and the steps that Fidel is taking to help men embrace their healthy masculinity and see it as a positive attribute.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Fidel set up the Modern Man initiative in order to help men reconnect with their healthy masculine energy. He achieves this by encouraging a healthy mindset, habits and a lifestyle that prevent men from slipping into areas that could be detrimental to their mental health and relationships.

  • Fidel believes that some men are currently experiencing a lack of certainty and connection with their own masculinity. Masculinity is sometimes held up as being negative by modern society. There are a growing number of people who do not recognise themselves as either being masculine or feminine, and Fidel believes that this conversation has taken over and dominated those who are perfectly comfortable with their own masculinity or femininity.

  • Sometimes roles in the workplace seem to define the energy we exude. Fidel believes that it’s okay for a man to exude his healthy masculine energy while being a stay-at-home dad. Or for a woman to exhibit her healthy feminine energy while running a multi-national corporation. By remaining true to our natural instincts, we can better define our own personalities, or else we risk having to alter our natural persona to fit in with our environment, which can be detrimental to our health and relationships.

  • Healthy masculinity is leadership with compassion and thoughtfulness. Fidel likens this proposition to dancing, an art form in which masculine and feminine energy work in flow and harmony.

  • The best healthy masculinity is often exhibited when we meet and are exposed to the most healthy feminine influences. Often this dynamic is reversed when we embark upon a long-term relationship, sometimes when men do their best to please their partner, they do it in a way that leads to a loss of masculinity.

  • According to Fidel, many men in search of therapy will often consult a female therapist, when in actual fact, it can be a lot more productive to conduct therapy with a male therapist.

  • Fidel and Lyn both support the idea of investigating the benefits of single-sex classrooms / education environments in order to help encourage the development of healthy feminine and healthy masculine energy traits.

  • Masculine interaction is in danger of being over-analysed. Even the act of touch is being perceived as sexualised behaviour, preventing many men from bonding physically, such as through engaging in a bit of rough and tumble / wrestling, especially in their teenage years.

  • Society can’t go backwards. We need to design a new way of interaction, beginning with defining and understanding what are the healthy masculine and feminine traits.
