S N Banerjea, a founder member of the Indian National Congress, had a distinguished career in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as a teacher and a politician.
However, he was also one of the first Indians to pass the ICS Examination in 1871. This episode of HistoryChatter revisits his early life as a bright student who went to England and passed the ICS Examination amid great difficulties, only to be unfairly dismissed soon after joining service.

It explores the various challenges he had to face during preparation for the examination and later as a junior officer during his brief tenure. Recalling his early life and career many years later as an elder statesman, Banerjea offers a compelling account of the challenges and struggles for the educated middle-class Indians aspiring for high positions in the service of the colonial state in India during the late nineteenth century.
