“Hey Black Child” by Useni Eugene Perkins, is not only a beautiful poem for young black kids, but it also serves as a powerful mantra. Have the Child repeat after this poem in a big voice! Have them recite it in the mirror! Have them recite it while dancing. The end of the poem states: “And Tomorrow Your Nation Will Be What You Want it to Be.” A great activity would be to have the child draw or discuss what the world would look like if he or she were king or queen of the world. What would schools look like? What would kids learn? Would there be homelessness? How would we help people, so they wouldn’t be homeless? What types of food would people eat? Part 2: “What are some things that you must learn right now to be a great king or queen of the world? 🌎 What types of books should we get for you?” Show lots of excitement and eagerness to support them. Enjoy! Read by Gahmya DrummondBey of Thekidyou and Evolved Teacher 👩
