When solving a complex puzzle one’s attention naturally tends to focus on the most immediate and binding constraint - the part that needs to be solved now as one cannot otherwise proceed. In so doing, one ignores the fact that even harder challenges may lie ahead and the current solution may be no more than a temporary reprieve. One step at a time, or so the saying goes. Covid-19 is a phenomenon somewhat of this nature. The immediate constraint the world is seeking to address is a vaccine. But when it does arrive the problem will still not have gone away. The goal post will have merely shifted to the next problem, which scientists are already warning us about. Adit Jain shares his insights.
