The first redemptive covenant in Scripture is the Abrahamic Covenant found in Genesis 12 and then repeated numerous times to Abraham, his son Isaac, and his son Jacob, as the line of promise chosen by God. Later revelation given by God adds clarity and details to prior revelation but never changes the prior revelation. -In this section the wild olive branches are descriptive of the Gentiles while the nation of Israel is described as being broken off for their unbelief with the Gentiles being brought in alongside individual believing Jews. The root describes the Abrahamic Covenant and the life comes by faith through the promises in that root, the Covenant. A thorough discussion of the Old Testament background clarifies the points the apostle Paul is making in this section of the letter to the Romans.
