Understanding the discussion in this chapter begins by realizing that the previous chapter has laid the foundation for what is said. As the new life, given by faith in Jesus Christ as a free gift, is lived out there will be progress in the sanctification of the believer. What is being clarified is the point that the Mosaic Law as given by God to guide the nation of Israel is done in its intent and purpose. No one as a believer, either Jew or Gentile, has an obligation to the Mosaic Law. The believer lives by what the New Testament describes a 'the Law of Christ' or simply the teaching of Christ. Keeping a particular moral code has been replaced by an inner obedience from the heart by the one who has been born again and given a new nature that loves God and desires to be obedient and pleasing to God. Any relationship to the Law is over because Christ has come, died paying the penalty for sin, and has been raised from the dead. Such relationship being over is illustrated by marriage and the death of a spouse releasing the surviving spouse from any further obligation to that relationship. Again, what is said in this chapter builds on what has been said in the previous.
