Do you want to leave a legacy?

Of course, you do! But how can you get others to remember you when you leave a company? Your host Linda Yates is here to tell you how to leave a legacy as a leader in today’s episode of the In-HER-rupt podcast.

Why Should You Want to Leave a Legacy?

  • Leaving a legacy is more than going to work and doing your job. It’s the ever-lasting impact you leave on employees and others around you.
  • You gain knowledge and skills throughout life from mentors, parents, bosses, and friends. What you learn from them can help others develop strong leadership skills.
  • Your legacy involves your positive impact on others and how you encouraged them to do their best.

How Do You Leave a Legacy?

  • Develop a clear vision of your mission and vision of every aspect of your life. This includes your employee, parent, friend, and mentor roles.
  • Lead by example on the qualities and traits you want others to see. If you want others to be motivated, be inspired to be motivated in everything you do.
  • Strive to empower and develop others by investing in their growth and development. For example, you can create employee opportunities to enhance their skills and talents.
  • Always have multiple lines of communication for your employees. Share your vision of a leader with your team, lay out goals, and create strategies to help them stay consistent in their work.
  • You should also engage in active listening. Positively provide feedback on how someone can do better.
  • Don’t forget to celebrate when a team member reaches their goals! This will encourage them to keep trying to do their best.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with your team and stakeholders. Let them know that they’re doing a great job.
  • Encourage your team to “think outside the box” when taking risks.

How Can You Make an Impact Now?

  • Think about your choices and actions and how they will impact others for years. Be sure to focus on the long-term impact of others and not the short-term impact.
  • Know that you can create a positive impact despite your negative circumstances.
  • Seek out collaboration and diversity. Everyone’s experience is different, and you can use this to change the workplace environment.
  • Journal everything that you do at work. This will help you share your current experiences and future insight to help others become strong leaders.
  • Network and give back to the community by engaging in activities that brings positive change to others.
  • Be active in succession planning to help those who take on your role become strong and efficient leaders.

“Remember, leaving a legacy as a leader is not about seeking personal recognition but rather about positive in-flow. It requires dedication, consistency, and a commitment to the well-being of the people and the organizations you lead.” -Linda Yates
