Rafael (or Rafi) is a 9th and 10th-grade Humanities teacher at the Flushing International High School in Queens, New York. Before his teaching position in New York City, Rafi has had the amazing privilege of working in public schools across the country, including schools in Denver, San Jose, and Oakland. His mission as a teacher is to empower his students to engage in authentic social-justice issues through project-based learning. When he is not teaching, Rafi enjoys exercising, cooking, video games, learning languages, talking to his family in California, and spending time with his fiancee, Valerie.
Mia Bertelsen has taught in the Coronado Unified School District for 23 years. She is currently teaching high school Spanish. Also, she has taught 2nd grade and kindergarten. Mia enjoys teaching about the Hispanic culture and since she lives on the border of Mexico and the US, she is active in border issues. Mia currently helps out rescue groups that save dogs and cats from the harsh streets of Tijuana. Lastly, she supports an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico with many fundraising events in her community.
