028: Creating A Community and Business Through Music with Jonny Wilson - a podcast by Stu McLaren

As a teenager, Jonny Wilson was told he could never have a real career as a musician, failed out of high school, and eventually became homeless. However, a drum teacher he met at 16 proved to be the mentor he needed. After traveling the world playing and studying music, he decided to build the music school he would have wanted to attend - and modeled it after his experience with that mentor.

Jonny now runs Build a Music School - a membership site that teaches others how to open life-changing music schools of their own. He cares not just about turning a profit, but making a difference - and it shows in his work. In fact, he has won the Local Hero Medal and the Young Businessperson of the Year Award in his city of Wellington, New Zealand.

Today, Jonny joins the podcast to talk about the mentor who changed his life, how he found a sustainable, fulfilling, and giving career in an industry that so few believe in, and how he makes music education accessible - and exciting - to everyone in his community.
