In the book of 2 Corinthians the Apostle Paul is with Timothy and is sending what is probably his fourth letter to the church at Corinth. He is sending this letter through Titus, a person who is known and loved by both Paul and the Corinthians. Paul has several reasons for writing. The relationship between Paul and the church, that he had founded, has become strained. He was planning on visiting them to bring healing to the relationship by explaining his actions and by answering the accusations made against him. He will do this, in part, by exposing some false “apostles” who had turned some in Corinth against him. He was also planning on collecting an offering for those persecuted in Judea that the Corinthians had committed to giving. A major portion of the book is Paul explaining his own suffering and the suffering of believers in general as being worth it because of the Gospel. The heart of Paul’s response is that everything he has been doing and everything he is planning is because of the Gospel. Because of the Gospel it all is worth it. All the suffering, persecution, accusations, struggles and disappointments are worth it because God has called Paul and the Corinthians to be ministers of reconciliations (Chapter 5). Paul wants the Corinthians to break away from a commitment to the protection and comfort of this temporary life and pursue a life based upon an eternal perspective grounded in the Gospel. Paul wants to restate and re-center the church at Corinth on the implications of the basic doctrine of the life, passion and resurrection of Jesus which Paul preached to them from the beginning (I Corinthians 2:2).  In this first message we will give an overview of the book of 2 Corinthians. We will show why the Apostle wrote the letter We will show that Paul took the risk of reaching out to the Corinthians because the Gospel made it worth it. We will be challenged to see our entire life and all our relationships in light of the Gospel.
