Richard McKenzie, professor emeritus of economics at the University of California at Irvine, has authored 30 books and is a nationally recognized authority on the Microsoft antitrust case. His research focuses on economic policy issues. McKenzie, who grew up in an orphanage in the 1950s, spent much of the fall of 2011 embedded in a "modern-day orphanage," The Crossnore School, which is home to about 100 children in a remote corner of North Carolina's Appalachian Mountains. "Miracle Mountain: A Hidden Sanctuary for Children, Horses, and Birds Off of a Road Less Traveled" is his account of life there, as related through the eyes of the children in residence who have heartbreaking and heartwarming stories of trauma and recovery. In this speech, McKenzie discusses "Miracle Mountain: Inside a Self-Proclaimed Modern-Day Orphanage."
