There is often an expectation of divine perfection in pastors, but Cody Barnhart emphasizes ministers are very much human. He agrees that pastors need people they can share struggles with, confidentially. “Most pastors absolutely need those people to open up to and I think most pastors don’t have them. I think many pastors, especially the ones I know, I’ve talked to personally, are afraid that they may lose their jobs or be perceived as weak leaders if they share something that is kind of too far for people to feel comfortable with, especially if it’s about some of these bigger issues” like suicide and depression, “intrusive mental health struggles.”
