Am 29. Juli 1960 gab die NASA das zivile Raumfahrtprogramm "Apollo" bekannt. Das "Apollo-Programm" sollte bemannte Flüge zum Mond, die Errichtung von Raumstationen und die Entsendung unbemannter Sonden zu Mars und Venus umfassen.
