It was 57 years ago this week when President Kennedy told the nation that Soviet offensive missiles were in Cuba and that he was instituting a quarantine to block all ships from the USSR with weapons from ever reaching the Communist nation.  Michael Dobbs, a former Washington Post reporter who has written a fascinating book about the Cuban Missile Crisis, outlines the facts and mythology of the event that had the potential of bringing about nuclear war.
