The announcement that former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has joined the already crowded Democratic presidential field — with reports that Michael Bloomberg, the ex-NYC mayor, may join as well — raises the question that many in the party are still not convinced that there’s an existing candidate who can defeat President Trump next year.  Aaron Blake of the Washington Post says there are more roadblocks for these new candidates as well.

Patrick and Bloomberg, should he run, are announcing well after nearly two dozen other candidates have been raising money, building an organization and participating in debates for months.  Julian Zelizer of Princeton University reviews the history of late-announcing candidates.

And Brian Lyman of the Montgomery Advertiser assesses the decision of Jeff Sessions, the former Alabama senator who left his job to join the Trump Cabinet — and suffer indignity in the process — to seek his old Senate seat next year.
